fan has shipped Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).Though you could sometimes feel the sexual tension between these two detectives onscreen, they never quite veered into relationship territory, much to our chagrin.

I think they needed to keep that line taut but very clear," Christopher told James Liption during his appearance on Thursday night (clip above). Never cross it." But these characters were so captivating onscreen on their own, they didn't really need to have a love connection spice things up a little, now did they?

That was thanks, of course, to the incredible acting talent behind them. There's always an unspoken shorthand to what we were doing. But yeah, constantly busting chops," Christopher said of what he and Mariska were like in between takes.

"[Mariska] was always ready for anything new, like let's try something. That makes it just so much easier," Christopher said. There's a lot to be said for that when you work with someone 16 hours a day, you better get along when the camera's not rolling as well [as] when it is. Well, if Elliot and Olivia can never be together, we're happy to know that Christopher and Mariska are true friends.

“No, you weren’t…,” Benson responded — but in a way, she proceeded to explain.

“I grew more in my last four years with you than I did in the 12 years that I was with him,” said Benson, who in recent years has risen in rank from Detective to Acting CO to Sergeant.

“That relationship, whatever it was, didn’t allow for anything else.

During the time that Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni played partners on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, there was a certain tension written in between the two characters the actors played out onscreen.

This was complicated by the fact that Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler was married for part of the series (before ultimately getting divorced), as well as and had children.

It was also complicated because Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson was often secretive about her relationships.
